American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Physicians

The AOA promotes public health and encourages scientific research. In addition to serving as the primary certifying body for DOs, the AOA is the accrediting agency for all osteopathic medical schools.

What is a DO?

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) are fully licensed physicians who practice in all areas of medicine with a large percentage practicing in the primary care specialties of family medicine, general internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Philosophy is the primary difference DOs and MDs. DOs emphasize a whole-person approach to treatment and care and are trained to listen and partner with their patients to help them get healthy and stay well. Osteopathic physicians focus on prevention, tuning into how a patient’s lifestyle and environment can impact their wellbeing. They strive to help their patients be truly healthy in mind, body and spirit — not just free of symptoms.

DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, the body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. By combining this knowledge with the latest advances in medical technology, they offer patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today.
